The Award Parents Zone

Since we began in 1956, our aim has been to help young people to plan and undertake their own programme of activities to develop mentally, physically, emotionally and spiritually.

We help participants become more motivated, disciplined and balanced. It’s not all about expeditions! The Award is equally about them learning new skills, exploring cultural heritage, assisting people within the community, or just doing what they love. Ultimately, we help bring the best out of young people in a non-competitive environment. The skills they develop are truly valued by employers and will continue to reward them long into their working lives.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

The Award offers three levels - Bronze, Silver and Gold. Each level has four specific areas - Service, Skills, Physical Recreation and Expeditions.

At Gold there is also a Residential Project. Participants must be aged between 14 and 25.

SERVICE
Activities that help the communities, individuals or groups. Your child could become involved in an environmental project, work with older people or young children or other children or help out at your local place of worship.

SKILLS
Pursue a hobby; develop a new skill or interest. From learning to drive or a new language to developing artistic talents; your child can do just about anything.

PHYSICAL RECREATION
Become involved in some form of dance, sport or fitness activity. Is your son the next Rooney, Tiger Woods or Monty Panesar? Or perhaps your daughter could be the next Kelly Holmes, Michelle Wie or Ellen MacArthur?

EXPEDITION
Perfect for developing organisational, teamwork and physical skills. Train for, plan and complete a journey on foot, horseback, canoe, boat or bike. The expedition must have a clear aim, such as exploring the environment or undertaking a challenging journey. With the Gold Award you will also need to undertake a Residential Project, which involves participating in a shared activity away from home.

SUPERVISION, SAFETY AND A PERSONAL APPROACH

All activities are carefully supervised and monitored. Health, safety and child protection procedures ensure that all volunteers have the appropriate skills and background to work with young people. We are highly sensitive to participants’ cultural requirements and can organise single sex activities as well as scheduling around important religious events.
