WELCOME
This part of the site is designed to provide information for operators and participants on how the Award Programme operates within business.
It also provides information on the programme and the options for participants.
The Duke of Edinburgh's Award is a programme aimed at personal and social development. It encourages young people aged up to 25 to take on new challenges with the guidance of their colleagues.
Participation in the Award by your employees offers them an individual challenge with clear business benefits. It encourages them to undertake exciting, constructive and challenging activities and enables them to get involved with helping the local community. It can open doors for their career development; it can open windows of opportunity for them and, most importantly, it can open their minds.
Your young workforce is the future of your company. With the right support, their energy and enthusiasm is a genuine asset.
MISSION
Our mission is to provide an enjoyable, challenging and rewarding programme of personal development for young people, which is of the highest quality and the widest reach.
Key Principles of the Award
It is essential that everyone involved in the Award, whether as a participant or leader, shares a common understanding of the principles which underpin all aspects of the Award's delivery. These key principles are:
Non-competitive The Award is a personal challenge and not a competition against others. Each participant's programme is tailor-made to reflect the individual's starting point, abilities and interests.
Available to all With a commitment to equal opportunities, the Award Programme is available to all those who choose to take up its challenge.
Choice Participants make a choice to enter the programme and commit their work time and their own time to undertake the activities. Participants' programmes can be geared to their choice and to local provision.
Balanced By choosing activities in each of four different Sections (five at Gold), participants undertake a balanced and wide ranging programme.
Progressive At each level, the Award Programme demands more time and an increasing degree of commitment and responsibility from the participant.
Achievement focused Before starting an activity, participants are encouraged to set their own goals. If they aim for those goals and show improvement, they will achieve their Award.
A Marathon, not a sprint The Award demands persistence and commitment and cannot be completed in a short burst of enthusiasm. Participants may want to continue with activities beyond the minimum time requirements set out for each level of the Award.
About personal development The Award is a programme of personal and social development. The value to participants is dependent on personal commitment, the learning process and the quality of the experience.
Enjoyable Participants and helpers should find involvement enjoyable and satisfying.
